If your little sailor gets a big cavity, the tissue inside their tooth—called the pulp—can occasionally become damaged or infected. When this happens, Dr. Skip, Dr. Stephanie or Dr. Katie may recommend either a pulpotomy or a pulpectomy to help calm the storm and protect your child’s developing smile.

When a baby tooth reaches a certain level of damage, your child’s pediatric dentist may recommend a restorative dentistry procedure called an extraction. If a tooth has extensive decay or trauma, the neighboring baby teeth are at risk of infection spreading, and sometimes, that infection can even reach the adult teeth waiting just beneath the surface, affecting them before they ever emerge.

After an extraction, the surrounding teeth will naturally begin to drift toward the newly open space. While it may look like open waters, that space is actually essential for the healthy eruption of your child’s adult teeth. To keep everything on course, your child’s pediatric dentist will place a space maintainer—a small, custom restorative dentistry device that acts like an anchor, holding nearby teeth in place and preserving the perfect spot for the new tooth to grow strong and steady.
