Using Silver Diamine Fluoride To Treat Dental Caries
Despite the best efforts to teach children about good oral hygiene, many young smiles still encounter rough waters when it comes to cavities. According to the CDC, 46% of children ages two to nineteen have had untreated or restored dental caries. At Wilmington Pediatric Dentistry, we use silver diamine fluoride—SDF for short—to help steady the course. It’s a gentle, noninvasive treatment that strengthens teeth and halts decay before it can drift any further.

What Are Dental Caries?
Dental caries, commonly known as tooth decay or cavities, occur when the enamel, or the hard, protective outer layer of the tooth, begins to break down. This process often starts when sugary foods and drinks feed bacteria in the mouth, leading them to produce acids that wear down enamel over time. The condition is primarily influenced by daily habits such as diet and oral hygiene, though genetics can also play a role. Much like waves gradually shaping the shoreline, these acids slowly erode the tooth’s surface, weakening its structure. If decay progresses deep enough to reach the nerve or pulp tissues, it can stir up pain, abscesses or even swelling—the dental equivalent of rough seas.
How Can SDF Treat Dental Caries?
SDF is a mixture of silver and fluoride. The silver gives it antibacterial properties, killing the bacteria that cause tooth decay and cavities. Simultaneously, the fluoride remineralizes the teeth, hardening the enamel. Think of it as giving your child’s smile a protective shell, like a seashell strengthened by the ocean’s minerals. The application process is minimally invasive, with no drilling or filling required. Dr. Skip, Dr. Stephanie or Dr. Katie will simply brush it onto the affected area, making the procedure quick and painless.

Benefits Of SDF
Just like a strong coat of sea-weathered paint protects a ship’s hull, SDF provides powerful protection for your child’s teeth, creating a barrier against decay and helping their smile stay strong through every tide. SDF has plenty of benefits for your child’s smile, including:
